Affiliates promote a product or service and target their campaigns towards individuals who have expressed an interest in the product or service. For example, if an affiliate wants to promote a video game to children interested in pets, he or she would use email marketing to find potential customers by sending out unsolicited emails, generally with links to the product or service. This form of advertising is popular with companies that sell video games or pet supplies because it is inexpensive to send out emails to potential buyers, and relatively easy to monitor the response rate.

The final way that affiliate marketing works is through a dedicated account manager.
